My Education

I am from Davidson, North Carolina, so I attended the local public school William A. Hough High School. I participated in many clubs and activities in high school. I took many advanced placement and honors classes. I found history and marketing classes very interesting, so I took many of them. I currently attend the College of Charleston, where I’m majoring in Physics. So far I’ve taken physics classes such as modern physics and photonics. I’m currently taking a class on planetary astronomy and black holes. College of Charleston is a liberal arts college, meaning students are required to take multiple classes on subjects that don’t relate to their major. I’ve taken classes like archaeology and the history of popular music. I am also a member of some clubs. I am currently the special events chair for my sorority, where I plan and execute a few events each year. I am very involved in my sorority and often volunteer at our philantropy, the Ronald McDonald House.

My Experience

I started working when I was in high school as a babysitter. I would watch my neighbors’ children or family friends’ children. I learned that taking care of a child is more work than I anticipated. I enjoy being creative, so usually we would do some type of arts and crafts. We would color or make a dream catcher or build a house out of popsicle sticks. I have also worked at retail stores. I learned how to use the cash register, take inventory, and be a good seller. I became comfortable going up to customers and helping them figure out what they should get. I also waitressed for a bit. I was expected to help put away the clean dishes, make any drinks the customers wanted, and take the customers order. I had to learn to use the coffee and expresso machine as well as the machine used to place orders.

My Project

In the long run, I would like to be a researcher for a major cosmetics company, like L’Oréal or Estée Lauder, because I’m passionate about using natural and organic products. There are so many toxic ingredients in our products that are extremely harmful to us and many people are unaware of it. Currently, I am a student at the College of Charleston, in Charleston, South Carolina. I’m majoring in physics and minoring in french business. After I graduate I will go to graduate school and I might try to get a doctorat. In order to achieve this, I need to have a good understanding of biology, physics and chemistry. Last semester I took a course on photonics, where I completed a research project in the lab. I became familiar with the use of a laser, a light sensor and PASCO software. My goal was to test the effectiveness of different types of sunscreens. This summer I will be doing research with a professor of biophysics. I will learn to conduct formal research, write an article explaining my research and present my research. To succeed in this job, I must know how to work in a laboratory, work well with others and be able to ask for or offer constructive feedback. I also have to be organized and precise with measurements. I would consider myself organized, because I hold a position in my sorority and have learned how to manage multiple projects and stay on top of my schoolwork. I am also sociable, because I have been a greeter at retail stores, where my job was to welcome the customer and form a bond with them. I would also say that I’m punctual, because I’m always five to ten minutes early for everything.
